• Goals: 1 - Reduce commuter traffic via reliable inter-city transportation system in Santa Barbara County;   2- Reduce bus emissions by 50% (NOx & NMHC);   3 - NOx less than 2.5 gms/bhp-hr.

• Engine / Vehicle: DDC 6V-92T engine / MC-9 coach (80% of the national bus fleet uses this engine)

• Technology: Phase I - Stewart & Stevenson's diesel pilot-ignited CNG (PING) engine;   Phase II - DDC direct-injection dedicated CNG (DING) engine

• Benefits: Cost savings (reduced fuel cost, reduced commuting costs, increased employee productivity), emission reduction, leveraged funding, OEM participation, wide applicability, local business participation, government-industry partnership

• Participants: Stewart & Stevenson (PING engine), Ortech (PING technology), DDC (DING engine and technology), Valley Detroit Diesel (installation), Exxon (program funding), SoCal Gas (program direction), Melni Bus Company (bus operator), Santa Barbara businesses (shuttle service subscriptions)

• Local Businesses: Melni Bus Company, Exxon, SoCal Gas, local employers

• Service: Five MC-9 buses operating to serve Lompoc, Goleta, Santa Maria, Buellton, Ventura and Santa Barbara. Employers arrange shuttle services to bus stop(s), and riders pay a modest monthly subscription fee.
